5 Tips for Career Self Development

One of the most important things you can do for your career success is to continually self-develop. So, what exactly does this mean? It means taking control of the way you think and feel about yourself at work, actively improving the things that have to do with you as an employee, and seeking out opportunities to grow professionally so that you can become more valuable to your company or organization and be poised for advancement in the future. While this may sound like a lot of work, it’s actually not difficult at all if you are deliberate about it.

1) Know Who You Are

If you are working to develop your career, it is essential that you first understand who you are and what you want from your career. If you don’t know where you want to be in five years, how can you expect to get there? Take some time and reflect on who you are as a person. Are there values or characteristics that define who I am? Do I have goals that define my professional self? How do these professional aspirations align with my personal values? How will I achieve them?

2) Value Your Strengths

Being self-aware is a big part of career development, and knowing your strengths is an important part of that process. Spend some time figuring out what you’re good at—and what you enjoy doing. Then, figure out how to turn those skills into a career or freelance job. For instance, if you like to write, consider writing for local newspapers or businesses. Other skills that might be easy to monetize include graphic design and photography, event planning, sewing and arts & crafts.

3) Develop a plan of action

If you want to get ahead in your career, it’s important to take a long, hard look at where you are now and what you want to accomplish. You can do a lot with an honest assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. Find out what your key skills are—and how well you’re doing in relation to them—and identify how much effort you’re putting into each one.

4) Find your happy place!

Think of it as a blank canvas—it’s up to you to paint a picture of what your career looks like in its ideal state. This can be everything from how many hours you want to work, where you want to live, and even how much money you want to make.

5) Never Stop Learning!

The fact is that no matter how many years you’ve been in your field, or what education level you have, there are always new ways to grow and develop yourself. Learning and development should be a lifelong process—not just something you do once and then stop. Here are some tips on how to keep yourself motivated

Never stop learning, because life never stops teaching.
